Common reasons divorce occurs

On Behalf of | Feb 7, 2019 | Divorce

There are various reasons why married Ohio couples may decide to end their marriage. However, there are some reasons for divorce that is more commonplace than others.

A list that ranks the most common divorce reasons was created based in part on a study that was conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. For the study, 52 people who had participated in a prevention and relationship enhancement program before getting married were polled. The goal of the program was to instruct couples on communication and resolving conflicts. The individuals who were polled for the study were those who were divorced 14 years after participating in the program.

According to the list, the most common reason for the divorce was a lack of commitment. This reason was pointed to as the main contributor to the end of their marriage by 75 percent of the study’s participants. A lack of commitment to marriage may stem from having feelings of friendship towards a spouse rather than a feeling of romance.

Infidelity is another very common reason for divorce according to the list. Many of the participants stated that an extramarital affair was the final, deciding factor that led to divorce. Some of the reasons provided for engaging in infidelity included issues with insecurity, fears of being abandoned and feelings of neglect.

Financial complications are also a frequent contributor to divorce. The existence of money issues, which can stem from the two spouses having different attitudes toward money, tends to add tension and stress to the relationship.

A divorce attorney may consider the factors of a divorce and may recommend certain legal strategies for obtaining the desired divorce settlement terms. The attorney might advise clients that litigation is necessary in particularly contentious divorces in order to resolve disputes regarding the division of marital assets and spousal support.
