Raising happy and healthy kids through a divorce is possible

On Behalf of | Nov 2, 2018 | Divorce

No matter how careful parents try to be, divorce will likely take a heavy toll on young children and teenagers. Legally separating is emotional, but parents in Ohio and the rest of the country can do quite a bit to protect their children throughout this legal process. With a bit of planning and some hard work, kids should be able to come out of these situations more confident and resilient.

Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania, believes that the “7 Cs of Resilience” will help parents and their children move past these difficult situations. Those “Cs” include competence, confidence, connection, character, contribution, coping and control. By focusing on those attributes, kids are often able to handle difficult situations.

In addition to instilling those attributes in their children, parents need to make sure that they remain as consistent as possible. Children tend to thrive when both of their parents maintain strict routines and constantly reassure them that they are loved. Spending a few nights a week reading together could have a major impact on a child’s psyche and overall happiness. Parents must also attempt to create new and positive memories throughout these situations. That might include taking trips, making meals together or going to local sports games.

Going through a divorce might be easier with an attorney by one’s side. Even amicable divorces can become emotional and exhausting in the blink of an eye, and experienced lawyers may be able to streamline these situations and make them as stress-free as possible. They might help with issues such as alimony, custody, separation of assets and child support.
